Riding and training with Ipswich Bicycle Club

Ipswich Bicycle Club provides a number of opportunities for riding and training with the club, from social rides with a cafe stop through to coached training.

All riders are requested to:

  • Read the Ipswich Bicycle Club Club Ride Code of Conduct before attending one of our rides.
  • Wear a helmet
  • u16′s must be accompanied by an adult. u18’s require a parental consent form completed.
  • To be able to change an inner tube
  • Have at least 2 spare inner tubes, pump and levers with them
  • Consider the speeds of the rides they are joining. An average speed is lower than the speed than the group will mostly be traveling at.
  • Club insurance covers riders for 6 attendances, after which you will be requested to join the club.

Social Rides

Our Saturday social rides continue to prove popular with numbers increasing week on week.
Our social ride is divided up into a number of groups to enable us to keep to manageable gorups on the road, and to match the pace and distance to riders ability.

Green 12/14 mph New and none members
Blue 14/16 mph Entry level group riding
Red 16/18 mph Faster more experienced group riders
Black 18/20 mph Experienced riders looking to progress through to Chaingang

All groups meet at the same Café and riders have the opportunity to change groups, subject to numbers and ride leaders approval.

When 9am Every Saturday
Where  Northgate Sports Centre, Ipswich
What 30-50 mile social group ride. Includes a refreshment stop half way. Groups stay together and keep to the pace of the slowest rider. Normal Highway road rules must be adhered to. Each ride will have a designated Road Leader. Riders who are unable to maintain the average pace of the fast group will be asked to return with the slow group following the coffee stop. The routes and the nominated leaders to be published in advance via the club Face Book group.
Who Riders that can maintain a speed for 1.5-2hours. Riders must have spare tubes and pump for punctures. A mobile phone is advisable. Non club members welcome just need to sign a form for day membership. Club members – wear club kit. u16′s must be accompanied by an adult.
Tips Bring a phone, some money, snacks and drink. Eat a good breakfast before you leave home.

Chain Gang

When 9am Every Sunday
Where  Jerwood Dance House, Ipswich Waterfront
What 60 mile race pace training. Talk before and after or during if you can. Riders must make their own way home if dropped from the group. Normal Highway road rules must be adhered to. Work as a group, it’s not a race so no attacking.
Who Riders that are racing and training regularly at speed. Riders must have spare tubes and pump for punctures. A mobile phone is advisable. Non club members welcome just need to sign a form for day membership. Club members – where club kit. Not suitable for under u18′s.
Tips Don’t ride at the front of the group if you are not used to the speed or distance, you don’t have to if you don’t want to.

Intermediate Training Gang

When Fortnightly alongside Chain Gang – June 1, 15, 29. July 13, 27. Aug 10, 24.
Where  Jerwood Dance House, Ipswich Waterfront
What As chain gang but the group stay together and keep to the pace of the slowest rider.

Coached Training

Where  Varies – see coaching pages
What Coached training with guidance on technique and bike handling skills. Gain confidence and fitness through drills and race practice. Winter (Sept–Feb) is offroad. Summer (Mar–July) is road based.
Who Any rider aged 7yrs+, Adults and parents encouraged.
Tips Bicycle, (always check whether an off-road, or road bicycle is needed), Helmet, Drink, Appropriate clothing for cycling in all weathers, Parental consent form completed at your first session.
